It was a great day for a drive to check out rummage sales and it was garbage day. As we were driving down a street, I spied this rusty ash tray sitting out with the boxes and bags. Surely I could repurpose it.

We loaded it in the van, complete with pine needles and old cigarette butts. I cleaned out the debris and it sat in the garage over winter. This summer I scrubbed her with an SOS pad and a vinegar solution to loosen and remove some of the rust. Once she was clean, I taped off the "marble-like glass section and the brass sections and coated her with a coat of Krylon Oil Rubbed Bronze.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWX5KQpDqCoJ25ZZUWdyrQDqmjhgSHV-lGy9mtCXqXJ5FxtRT_QIe79MzkyH9YQOviQQhdvA5Er_dXJYfS8DS2A8f4mME-wAeGt9el4YQUs8DvIOqabjQxr-n5tMOn78p_RftArlXBqmg/s400/DSCN0087.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631070001093214034" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXDVvsoSh4re-OJHfsaRz1DrIgcRVlWBnPnpB3baTAXfHBv7SMBXK0bHTeg3fbhHxgwGiGf6dgTqcy_QPgKGJXKDc0BzP8AjG3HiR2JbJRn1m4rYmzi0My7_85nce_M_sc30bVPn91y0g/s400/DSCN0089.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631069981596231682" />

Magically, a rusty piece of junk became a great plant stand for the patio!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLa5id9QV8qC6XnJ-UC24-dHU2Lo0hehFXwBFUuFJFUTuNjwSDV4CGs4valuAnnf_VaEitVSUivqd7bBX4YyMXL-x16YFoO2QFeZxMEOLI5Lq1iMocOQNBcp48Ai5oEUzNC7A57rIHyyI/s400/P7070028.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631069988700720130" />Vintage Retouché by Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01409952149660994861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593033939490941426.post-16181516887047721832011-07-14T13:08:00.000-07:002011-07-14T13:51:07.626-07:00For the Budding Home Decor Gal!I purchased an adorable antique child's cupboard when my daughter was four years old. She is nineteen now. How quickly time passes. This was one of those UFO's, (unfinished objects) that had been stored in the basement for 15 years. It was completely painted in a creamy yellowed and checked white paint. ASCP (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) to the rescue! I thought it could be painted over if I thoroughly sanded the piece, but the old paint just gummed the sand paper. The entire piece needed to be stripped using that yucky chemical furniture stripper. I have stripped painted pieces in the past but I have never a piece like this. The paint dissolved into a liquid cream that needed to be scooped up not scrapped. My mom spent many hours stripping and getting the awful sticky mess out of the corners. After a gentle sanding and a thorough washing it was time for ASCP.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKb_AAUiNvu7jS7jS1ydcWH2KbPsVStV58v4YylOV5UHL4dj8oeNhKIB-lSZ_Flki2G7Cw8kbqpOsOu7gHj1FfWf3OnaBnfZ1UH0QVAPg1uUCph9l9_APar9VqZxecsvmW0oc8slDr0yU/s400/DSCN0105.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629308238027765650" />

The majority of the cupboard was painted with Old White and the inside of the cupboard was painted with Louis Blue.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBWJH5hT0bKA9ALfsm8LRXBCHM8nQMIxZNYP6tOzpSdiStnSO0shCznzGcelwFujpx9rOh5aY3fQoOk6ogE3ctEXfSFySUDeBjFXBtENFJZ0vNjYfx3PxhFAuqIc3c8dlJpnd2bPVIx90/s400/DSCN0103.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629308248607897602" />

The drawer pulls were carved wood but I sprayed them with oil rubbed bronze by Krylon to give it that look so popular in repurposed home decor today.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvsKUGH7Bc3ObdlsVj2H88OmpKOeAZ4OTPcrXKOT4Nvm4TZYxSAXOkHql-_JzIL1mMte0fusHxrhsjj5DUw_Eu2dwPe7dnbHtM_oZD-UQh-F4NVfNF5R5rvOia592ZOradSfKllDhjbRA/s400/DSCN0102.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629308264674294818" />

I think about the joy a little girl had long ago when she received this cupboard lovingly made by a father or grandfather. There was an entire bed covered with new vintage hankies. Hankies must have been the Christmas gift for teachers in the 1950's and 1960's. The designs were so beautiful so we snatched up a huge lot of hankies. We are doing Viva's Vintage Market this Saturday in Sister Bay, Wisconsin and I needed a way to display some of the hankies. I used my daughter's iron dressmaker form jewelry hanger as a starting point. The white metal form was purchased at Hobby Lobby. I selected all of the white hankies with pastel tatting or crocheting and pined about thirty of them around the base of the dressmaker form.

Next, I selected the colorful floral hankies and pinned about the same number around the waist of the form. To accent the waist, I folded a pink hankie with tatting as an apron.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiia53TP4LP3WqOJWwz83GRARb6FLVsIiK4evJBxl4Yz6TogQJC2isZB0KEOjgzACZW8KVTXj6PSZR-2pDAW2kriJQpIV1qEk3aqG__XDXvBB_1IQuCDvwY1UbMlEOr_9bVZ_rvJDFlUFY/s400/DSCN0093.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626797825811035074" />

The sleeves are made from three hankies pinned to the shoulders. Other party decorations could include, buntings made from other vintage hankies hanging from the trees and I have even used hankies as napkins. Recently I saw a picture of a bride who tied her bouquets with vintage floral hankies. On the job front I will be teaching full time next year in the Science department of our local public high school. It is a great position and I am anxious to once again spend more time in the classroom.

At the same time my mom and I have been busy going to estate sales and repurposing vintage finds into beautiful items to sell at Viva's Vintage Market on July 9th in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. This great little flea market features the best vendors and was named in the latest edition of Flea Market Style Magazine. Do stop by and check it out.

After spending the last three months reading about the wonders of Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint for restoring furniture, we decided we needed to get on the band wagon as well. We ordered our paint from Delucca Designs in the Chicago area. The owner Michelle is so helpful. I wanted to order all of the colors, but my mother restrained me and we selected colors that would micmic the colors of the Door County waters.

This was our first project with Chalk Paint. I picked up this little telephone stand for $5.00 at an estate sale. The little chair was in need of some wood glue so it was thrown in with the table. I selected Provence for the table and then just had to try my hand at mixing Old White with Provence for the chair to create a bit of variety.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp0vo4w_1MN5_4hQlfV5r1RvZaHPfzleVR5moFQDUvkan_VPsWO_5Ye_ktgUvVqRI-nR5rDHCWQkd2Q0FP-r5O6ywV5yPJ7sT_Lrnd6QbWBefZnww-kby03jPQmO5Ufdmfmc0IQ0fSfnI/s400/P6300002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624185513857542690" />

The pieces were distressed and waxed with clear wax followed by a coat of dark wax. In January I had a long term substitute teaching job and was kept busy staying on top of 5 different high school preps. In doing that, I realized what I have probably known for the last 10 years, that I love being a teacher. On the other hand, I truly missed the blog world, the world of repurposing and making something old useful. I'd race home each day after school and immediately sit down and read all of my favorite blogs and dream. A recent job loss has forced me to try to make some money in different ways. I know there are teaching positions in other parts of the country, but I have a son and a husband who are comfortable in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Maybe my new found passion will be the way I repurpose myself. If furniture can gain a new life with a coat of paint, why can't I?

A trip to Barnes and Noble last weekend has revitalized me and helped to focus on my other passion. How you might ask?

This little spot in the Latest edition of Flea Market Style.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-GTLTVArDWcLvnx9WvXCjvV1_p3nROxqZ_zwghqEXxdvwDjTBuBJbgEiWwj7Zx6ekML5soyT8b0wEU1dXFyqBGqRX0HRjDOIbYGQWMziHKwDB8b1zUfuCRphvxKbudyxHr5hKlkv-IPE/s400/fmscoverspring2011a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577768338025018802" />
My mom and I were vendors at Viva's Vintage Market and I had so much fun, so I thought the entire world that is hooked on blogging and decorating with vintage finds should know about this lovely little show. I submitted a little entry after reading the Flea Market Style Bog, and now on page 29, my name is in print. Pick up a copy at your local bookstore. It's filled with great ideas. Technology enables us to have contact with so many more people. The possibilities are endless.

So I am busy dreaming and planning what finds to bring to Viva's Vintage Market this year! Maybe these will be some of the special finds customers will find in Vintage Retouche at Viva's Vintage Market this year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH7sEkSfQ4jJn3It7v_9audR0qkXjHm3L8IIDjNViTtP7zubZajYeQOu7K9GzeNjYeuNHUFaajLGi0XeP_F45-5v2lLPSwYXLl5jq4FgOqgS7Y88srWqMxb_RGXVH17d-Wy-pRDf6jYFY/s400/P8130062.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577765934259158994" />
A Vintage Checkerboard with Embossed Checkers

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUBgZ4aaFQ0CBKUREgIVw21Mioa2Bse-mgOgcS1s-0MinSONlbSFf83uT0eN4CYUfaaDcb5UH5Au5li2TjeY8kn1UVS0jeb77U8yIbE7d6aWmkWACFgcNdP6k2sqPxOVjRGNR5a8DeYdY/s400/P8130083.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577765927684838562" />
A Basket of Children's Aluminum Cookware

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ-80qSD_xhTp8M86VOhTUlX6ilwH9sRPdMN_41zGTa0pLKSddfVrTzPnXbn2JUXUNV1MZqrTqQ0Ggx_posDOwuwKU9TCG9EYEqOGt6IUyqewKPiFE3ebb83SJA3NI0lG15SImu5n1cyk/s400/P8130067.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577765924274426594" />
Adorable Bisque Sailor Boy

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbyL0Fv2rjMQwI0F57PGfUUu5Vsh8LfutFR5Cal7RAenpxBCll5rzhwax7gJoTO-3Ui1avdVVpEkiCgDPoe-C0MyQZXdi_b-qLypPxWYYIrHzzuU8sl4oM_AdIkUcn1ja_zJA86Y2rHsA/s400/P8050055.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577765922297763890" />
Retro Red Kitchen Items

Mark your calendars for the Saturday after July 4th for a trip to Sister Bay, Wisconsin to attend Viva's Vintage Market. It was probably a souvenir someone brought home from Mexico or the Southwest. I loved the scalloped edges and the grayish silver patina. The bottom of the tray had a tinwork design that screamed southwestern decor. Not my taste at all. I didn't know if it would work, but I thought I had a plan.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8VZrypdPzNhnzup1LhoHcoaXQawcdI-OsvJarJuEKtKNa4h3MbJVp-Q-NtR3c04_we1r3ihWlwJ5uYIoAAp6GjrYR-I7674emfKjn_afoMmSmUB0IYb4SiCUdR0dfcaMVEn_-yauTrVM/s400/PB060036.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559585707155790370" />

I used scraps of vintage sheet music left over from another project and I used Mod Podge to adhere the sheet music to the tray. Two coats of mod podge were applied over the sheet music. When the Mod Podge dried, I used three coats of wipe on poly to make it durable. Here it is!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh92GmjaEcQw92uXzgz4XGOJl6w611jygdgC6dnrCDPfufyC3UQ2r4GFTwB7JqOfCVWcth0cF_w-oaJvb9DsBt8hjTDFlTHuZHYvk_wGWtBtqmor7rrvsbkRd8g9W0b10i9pIvbmj0sw28/s400/P1070040.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559589609996726066" />

I love the combination of the more yellowed sheet music and the sheet music that has a more creamy background.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1CuHGyAvQb_7uPSEVsglFApNEM-M0rprN-MNp-Oyjjn0QhGJGjLObDFOQognuscSLhrK8TFrzOYfu8qcyMhBslcQg9yO8EMOUj1O0H5fEpg9onR-NK1-k_LvdjeqGKAXOB4k5F50VNbE/s400/P1070042.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559592138737528930" />

I decided to stage my new creation for Valentine's Day. A stone cherub, a vintage silver candlestick, some old millinery flowers, and a vintage valentine are the perfect adornments for tea for two. The creamy Wedgewood cups and saucers are the perfect color on the sheet music background. The napkins are vintage Valentine hankies. This is a great way to use hankies and it adds to the eclectic vintage mix. The demitasse spoons are from my flatware. Can you believe I registered for old silverplate for my wedding? Excuse the wrinkles as I am a bit hesitant to iron it. Does anyone have suggestions? It is a Turkey Red Damask tablecloth that was never used. When Martha Stewart featured her collection of Turkey Red Damask on her show, I used the Internet to search down Claudia Glassman a vintage textile expert who was a guest on the show and a vintage textile collector and seller. After some emails and phone conversations, I had this wonderful tablecloth in my possession. Claudia told me it was museum quality. Unfortunately Claudia died a few years ago. My largest Nativity set is displayed on the buffet in my dining room. Most of the Nativity figures are from a set I purchased from an antique dealer 25 years ago. The colors are vibrant and rich. This set is German, as the figures are not as twisted as the Nativity sets made in Italy. I have added German Putz animals to the set and a few German angels as well.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0uxjFLHNbajuHwMKRaDh1yR_KOdCTKIKM4agVKmmKmtubqKR94kyfNcVN0WBBBO_K-TqhCfre7WXbe2ktR9bohMHTLcschMyC2kUJfjsxU2Et5Uw-MAArPYCHLHYUl7rIz3dGjdWxD3U/s400/PC080017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549664518865613202" />
My stable is not as old. I would love to find an old German stable that was the right scale. I collected smaller sets from the thrift stores for each of my children and they would always set them up in their bedrooms under there own special Christmas tree. They would move the animals around and never put Baby Jesus in until December 24th. These are the wonderful memories of Christmas time! Figures for vintage Nativity sets were sold at Woolworth's and Five and Dime stores for less than a dollar. Families would buy a new figure each year. I can just imagine a family going downtown to look at the beautifully decorated windows and Christmas decorations and carefully selecting a new figure for their creche.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKcbmultCxAuazAaZSmtJGMEqIF4JvMy7r8liV20ugL0sBjCUNklBvdfFTHzzHoR7MYAGih_JTC7eDAu_RP_qOyD-Q5QMR979_G_Ucj3DvvLIRVWQWD6MWXQ1bXqtD5rRDZqNhMOtMy8A/s400/PC080016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549664528927475554" />
My set has some unique figures. The camel is very large and beautifully painted. The set includes a camel driver as well. I added the two German composition camels. Another very unusual piece to this Nativity set is the palm tree with its wax leaves. It is so fragile and the only person that is allowed to touch it is me!

We are under a blizzard warning until tomorrow night. It rained a bit before the snow hit so the trees are just beautiful. I'm going to try my hand at "Winter Wonderland" pictures tomorrow. I spent most of the day decorating my tree in the living room with my antique ornaments. I have put several hundred ornaments on and only have about 100 more to go. As a little girl, I would pass the time before Christmas by making new decorations or making gifts for my family. You wouldn't believe my collection of vintage Christmas decorations. I have a tree of some sort in every room of my house. Each room is decorated a little bit differently and I generally tend to put all one sort of collectible together. Small vintage collectibles make more of a statement when they are grouped. I just finished my den using my vintage and handmade Santas.

The room has a built in desk unit with bookshelves. I normally use the shelves to just display my collection of transferware. At Christmas I nestle the Santa figures in among the dishes and add a few vintage bottle brush trees and fresh cedar.

Check out my display.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmEBEUjsXBcSxkGpBioWU_P6dz99yrwYj7xFPT8rV1929EAtnhfDwSAVT2HNPHLCEmg5nUtHLzZKoNKst3becW9UfzcQXqvP5z15MUuAU8Uov4AtYiPJUTwwOVVAml2OCA9_rv6yIMSN0/s400/PC060029.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547637279014743282" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB1C3WNcn3SNhF0KYZJY4Ri9PA0v4mvUpOCw_8keto8wZ_WGhNiwS4gQi9S5-o16u8XGvCKJHhlpQAJ6Jzcr1ca46aHJn3Ww4fu46agO5c6DV9kWocPzoYkuAdUQi7mLx9ZiOY33TGwKQ/s400/PC060026.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547637275708025858" />

A few close-ups.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBXKGFYiFuJsA0D1ACZh3grLJ87Mp4M4C3HhUY9NAzOWQ7MOzqp_mHsf7A3Fe1tNlcbQB568am7mqqY58DmgS5jlbrvwcuy30rZG-KM90c423pAB5CRK9oqXO0nXH2bwYr2uFOXXZi_0c/s400/PC060009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547641845330238882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 159px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR9XNPELU2aEH4tRw5RARM_5HGYuJ6X8Tfd0m9E_lOoyL2cNlF007M_eMoIW-8CA8mtNPp4fq3LwCWLIKemmKCUopROFGtagK1OM9dPvyBR1jpeToc0qHYw9IdOIWhd9QTeKt3tKEZuek/s400/PC060011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547641840009750018" />
German Santas and one of Christopher Radko's first issued candy containers

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOfVSc7-KWwkVfKS2qZmr9_G_1oLEZB0E4lGFdounrR-e7pnIzIUIv5uozGF9QXtDXc8lGVkChua9yrITT_uKA21jf8khioH3jK_DP_BcuRPsTdnLllnlMReqQAiQVCv4XhURuk4X2hv0/s400/PC060010.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547641831916204466" />
Some of my Santas are handmade. I couldn't believe I found two of these trees on the shelf at the local thrift store for $3.00.

In among the sheet music was an old church hymnal from 1929. Many hymns were in Latin. I fashioned lovely little angel ornaments from the hymnal pages, folding the skirts and added vintage chenille pipe cleaners for arms. I used German scrap faces and beautiful gold German Dresden halos and wings. I made two sizes. A great place to get the German Dresden trims is Blumchen's. The on-line catalog has many wonderful supplies. When it comes to Christmas I love anything vintage and German. I used pages from my grandmother's 1934 cookbook and added some vintage cotton rick rack and ribbon apron strings. These became perfect ornaments for two kitchen trees. I used vintage tin cake pans for the stands, added my perky little apron ornaments on the branches. I had several old spice boxes, so I ran a piece of jute twine under the lid and made a few spice box ornaments. I made the little candy peppermints by cutting 1/2 inch strips of white and colored wool. I put on a little glue to hold the two pieces together and rolled the two pieces and secured the end with some more glue. All that was left was to attach a string hanger and hang these "no-calorie sweets" on the tree. The little "elf" perched on top of the tree is a wool ornament my mother made.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0U11WSWK9KKTA9tu7UjjjpNIBO652QID-ms4PU6caQk8FYfs2T_9ugm0VRscivgjrj_9uiTo30WEkM8rba9NTU4YGUm915_jjurfyOuvaCHaFS5BTb_f-NgNl-SutZW78lC40rKad1-c/s400/PB180064.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544836056843177794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 189px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRn0Wh8hS-JlLhW7TD76Vy0zQ7uue0NRe7pGTvuD_-lsX94Pi8bjcsHZn1oU3cCRe-ZdQDqx6ZF2y-kAPsApJvNzhNlG3hR7sXsK85Xi1puLCn2vAmFm7vFBbTNlz3UqF9rowdTsLT9vE/s400/PB170058.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544836053299462498" />

A plate full of the little "wool goodies" my mom created.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYV3kikfNp3zVz02IC8vXCjf6aIJjYtDjNTPyd8wwHVXJad67p0iJ0he5EKd7HRQqQuvR6YvJforvaZcHg0jv2uzlJmbqAw4gfrBDd_DR-MiQmyQ8Te4MzJWgMpZMe4gwlzYGxmglWgEQ/s400/PB180002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544838763344255042" />

I hope to do a little holiday decorating this week. As I was looking for inspiration for a Holiday Market I was doing, I decided I would create a line of decorations using the vintage sheet music.

Sheet music was used to make elegant topiary trees in vintage silver containers adorned with heavily glittered black and silver butterflies carefully punched from card stock. I added a little vintage tinsel for sparkle. Everything was repurposed in this project as I used paper packing for the moss in the topiary container. These trees would work with any style decorating because of their simplicity and understated colors.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 233px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIMFjzI75eb4ugRvMTU20fmUbp9l22_ln1CiK9ljl4moWmSrB3fmTVgh2LQgTYjlzy5PGBnSeBCJ-TARJ3mHYkFMISP56jVZzq9PL1nUCP8MY0Qy1GBIzvxKC5EQ-CcB39kdOqL-Xhf_g/s400/PB170057.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544336580659965794" />

I used Mod Podge to apply pieces of vintage sheet music to foam cones. For the "stem" I used a 1/2 inch dowel painted black. I secured the topiary into a vintage container using floral foam for silk arrangements and hot glue. All that was left was the addition of the simple black and silver butterflies. I used Martha Stewart's butterfly punch and punched butterflies from card stock. I used white glue and heavily glittered the butterflies on both sides. I scanned a punched butterfly to enlarge it and then I traced and cut the larger butterflies by hand.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJW2V3ujewCs0COggoo04jpCbR3AHqM1HqHZyBMNd0E859YdQGflTiEDhYPGGdt7YmCXg3sgOVKoEnsIcvGEXtzCnKUm0OT6UzOPBgWzAQORRphYfQ7tUN-MEDLopr2AQJ2SZs0VfnX5U/s400/PB170056.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544336576195876914" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzkbxdjolXDSdj_anIdTk3kYzh2GlYYZ6PHKe7IbUiQZ6Wd4B1t8_mZkAltw4Rlg0fbviJUtt0GxVBqUytOXfqRMtAkd_lm4rLvB-VrzYnGOYiUyt8ik2trvGq_RwwnFqAC1ZXkioTz3Y/s400/PB170055.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544336567392505554" />

Unfortunately the shoppers that day were only lookers so i have my beautiful topiary trees left to use in my holiday decorating.Vintage Retouché by Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01409952149660994861noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593033939490941426.post-13652618687710296002010-10-28T20:58:00.000-07:002010-10-28T21:45:39.489-07:00Sitting PrettyThis project is a combination of two of my favorite things to do, hand-stitched wool applique and repurposing vintage furniture.

I found a great vanity bench at a resale shop. The price was right and I saw possibilities. The first part of the process is securing old wool clothing, skirts, jackets, and yardage. Throughout history fabric was valuable so women used every scrap. Women would never think of discarding an article of clothing that could be refashioned or used for a household item. The tradition of wool applique grew out of a tradition called penny rugs. Women would trace large coins and "pennies" cut out the pieces and hand stitch them to a background to make decorative rugs for the hearth.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 197px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMqYERZ1x2FjyXV-hM2-KFXvb3wLhye9P76oNkCx1W31Zj3rvRY3eIIehyLpbCKPDELwGAmuvocGzx66IC1cpi-eNjirHOvRqUfOkz150Lm1oQssZJheHEKvyRrHGVkRcp3Au7au1KU3E/s400/P7080025_2_2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5533322991704002978" />

Finding clothing these days made of 100% wool is difficult. The clothing is cut apart and washed in the machine using hot water, detergent and a cold rinse to shrink the fibers of the wool together. The felting process prevents the edges from raveling when it is appliqued to the background. A color scheme is selected and a pattern is drawn. The pieces are cut from a variety of colored wool and then blanket stitched or tacked with small stitches to the background. Embroidery is used for detail work. All stitching is done with pearl cotton. Once I had the bench top completed, it was time to paint the bench. I primed it and painted it with two coats of my favorite red. Once the paint was dry, I distressed the edges and applied three coats of paste wax.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 107px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcWNbW1eZg8mVbKYya1YKmXAiyjjMEM-gaSS67o-qINZVePPhKbd8WljlQruR7uFIw8QeBtCkFUFII7js2YHeCggmlWyFmcnvPl-EZNkj7G0UTUjXt9GpbLrneyY_DWOJw29b5_jolNTI/s400/P7080025_2_3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5533322996242078338" />

The last step was to tack the covering on the bench and glue on "gimp" to hide the raw edges. The wreaths are adorned with glittered glass ballet shoes and a sparkling tutu ornament. My daughter received three fabulous parts in the University production of the Nutcracker Ballet and so I made and donated the wreaths for a fundraiser that helps support the ballet. The Nutcracker Tea is in November but it was just easier to transport them by car rather than package and ship two fragile wreaths.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 341px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQum4g7GLwaSFxNCNfIdcIqSc8YYfEarbn1aGpY6GEia8i9QZg9bi6Rc2W-kjtbg50nNd5fPeYRFyi6nTNixZYYdbWbGLwpfDm_vf10-qivr856g2y6pzyzp6-LSqIIiH7RelbkdvHSuQ/s400/P9300029.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524033594293138834" />
So Beautiful!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 339px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNbJBdlDbEUEUUe2xoqCifZYSWQv4RjhDLINJp6veb1ZMhyffZMxa_V_7ilYf-uJa8h33mLqdXOrEPMUMWfw4UrjRADz0CaCjMFO8th4Iair1YMGb-y5jadE6uNV1IRyuFx9D2ZWbj3Fg/s400/P9300030.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524031701996276690" />
Wouldn't this one be perfect as a holiday decoration in a girl's room or hung on a mirror?

I visited a few resale shops in Winona over the weekend. I am in the process of redoing my son's bedroom, so with limited funds I turned a "free" dresser into the perfect chest for a room with a French Industrial feel. The technique was a rather simple one that I saw on Miss Mustard Seed's Blog

I crinkled large sheets of aluminum foil and smoothed the wrinkles out a bit. Next I applied the foil to the dresser with mod podge, making sure the sheets were tightly adhered. A wooden craft stick was very helpful in firmly pressing down the foil. I should have probably primed the chest with gray primer because if the first layer of foil tore, the taxi cab yellow paint showed. So I applied another layer of foil to the entire dresser. I then applied two coats of mod podge over the foil. To give the dresser a feeling of zinc, I applied asphaltum glaze and blotted it off with paper toweling. The final step was the application of two coats of wipe-on poly.
This was the result.

The foil, mod podge, glaze and wipe-on poly cost was about $18.00.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 306px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtz6tiWvCEnu6xXMDIi47Dihi8tDLYRQa6MLTQ7UVvZS5ziiSc6FWeWhwEoUBACVpS5mbOWX26N0Gg0Kd2xwQYdTQXiSUeWAYv4VvM5ZNTf_2F_zRtMZ6vETdHdKkRr1UVV7NxMIFHITQ/s400/P9300027.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522939337559234802" />
I found the perfect knobs at Lowe's. We decided to take a drive to Door County and have a picnic lunch. I just wanted one more great photo of the two kids together. But as you can see it wasn't going to be. Taking photos of teens is just as difficult as photographing toddlers. When one smiled the other squinted. One wanted their picture taken, the other thought I was nuts. This was the result, but I have a photo and wonderful memories. I couldn't ask for any more. Our family excursion gave me time to dream as well as enjoying my family.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJjcd7ZcDPbe_PtczFurPcV2n5GFlHy-VicOpPnDQVkH_soWS4LzzI31OldFH-vo718Bx9CdMpghSSC84lrMGJ9ZCpUJTNtUJ2f5kNDSBVSyCgr5cWOhBKXPiOe4w2Ei8OIMP-oL5Bg_8/s400/P8220046.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508782118263322146" />

I am longing for a place to design, repurpose and create. It is located in the woods on the back of the property, but perhaps it could be moved and restored. It has knotty pine paneling which I would paint white of course, wonderful wavy glass windows with adorable shutters and a welcoming front door. It would need a new floor and lots of scrubbing to get rid of mold and mildew but it has possibilities. Where have 18 years gone? Losing my full time job over a year ago has made money very tight. After studying the pbTeen catalog it was off to the resale shops and clearance shelves at Target. My daughter selected the comforter and pillow sham on the very discounted clearance shelf. Thrifty girl! Mom rolled up her sleeves and said, "I can recreate the catalog look with a few cheap finds and a little paint." We found the adorable step table at St. Vincent de Paul Resale Shop. After a coat of primer and three coats of white paint, it was transformed into the cutest bed side table. A free picture frame, some white linen, paint, padding and a board made this one of a kind bulletin board. In July while I was doing the Vintage Market at Viva la Cottage we spied the great vintage shadow box in Carol's booth from the Vintage Nest. Primer and paint created the perfect place for a few keepsakes. I love the embossed plaster design. It is in perfect condition.

My daughter's room will be a place she can call home! I am sure I will miss having her in the bedroom down the hall.

I feel my eyes becoming very watery.Vintage Retouché by Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01409952149660994861noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593033939490941426.post-4864289862514493332010-07-23T15:19:00.000-07:002010-07-23T15:26:17.703-07:00Celebrating Hannah<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZMzyIkjJLk4qAh332dZUuo4fzVmHWRt5JtoQSWQXgr1uZoOH_hmyynK-XZy5J6TF_hRL1SWaBA3jTOS9RRQWd4DeMxZ5D5U1Vf8Ifz2i-fQst10a8kFIozTXAhxcfPLiNtcQq0IzMeqE/s320/xIMG_0057.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497231261104349826" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij7eJz9MsvrMkPJVF-V2Q5Vl8QkKosjhYo7oeYgpBeYskR5M0-bg66_oE1FwZM7WqTLUMZ1zfaHoK6GFB7nDsYxbABPKgMaUBeztYRHiVC1QcFa2IjlT1-RbqqzVcMfv3bq5fCR4HlCH4/s320/xIMG_0237.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497231252850390514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcUUqxELixdvObnkBA7XTkoDrLAnT_Ybj4RDRaFD1lqB7Q3SHh0PsdXM52ZUgdO0o176C1v3sb-S6KSGq4UDO8nNp-yNITJ7L_uS559GRSetj6N31lkm4YFqs987yxMrRQm427_ttgArg/s320/xIMG_0323.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497231239325319922" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA4GPU2xMErFYPmT4rHk25GdCCakABUmTlp4I3kkOSZRwWibzAojbind0XG92LjBuHSXi8Rt0K_O-FpM-KPtS6zDyqhYr-qXTaIZ1clZcI0gB-FzuKIrvOIMxdANkyOHOmK8rzPe_VVR8/s320/_MG_0084.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497231220350831554" />
This weekend my daughter is in the summer show, "One Hit Wonders" at RHS. I'm not exactly sure how I will use it in my Christmas displays but it has endless possibilities. Someone used a old handle, secured it to a wooden base and then wrapped it in chicken wire to fashion this tree. Maybe it was a creation not yet finished, but I love it just the way it is. I know mixing it with white and some time worn ornaments would be fabulous. My niece and nephew from Texas are staying with us for a few days. The girls want to go shopping and the boys would be content to just play video games. The day should be interesting!Vintage Retouché by Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01409952149660994861noreply@blogger.com0
